Finding the right Psychologist can feel daunting, but it's important to have a good fit. Success in therapy is determined more by the quality of the therapeutic relationship than the type of therapy used. Read on for points to consider when searching for your Psychologist.
Face-to-face Versus Telehealth
Consider whether you'd like your therapy to be in person, online, or a mixture of both. Research shows telehealth is no less effective than face-to-face therapy, and it can be great for people who live remotely, have accessibility needs, or work to a tight schedule. However, some people find it containing to go to a space that is specifically designed and designated for therapy. Consider what is needed for your emotional safety and confidentiality, too.
Location and Convenience
The location of your Psychologist's office should be convenient for you to get to. Therapy can be hard enough, so you don't want to add additional barriers to attending. Ideally you want to choose somewhere close to your home or work, or a location you frequent. You may also want to consider what days and times the Psychologist works, and whether that fits your schedule.
Financial Considerations
Therapy is a worthwhile investment, for sure; but it should not cause you financial stress. Make sure you know your Psychologist's fees ahead of time and have worked it into your budget. It's hard to say how many sessions you may need, so plan for being able to do more than less. You may be eligible for financial support which will cover a portion of some sessions. If a private Psychologist is not right for you, consider your local public/community services, which are often free or for a reduced rate.
Psychologist Demographics
Consider what kind of Psychologist you would feel safe enough to be challenged by. This may not be the same as someone you would feel comfortable with (as therapy often isn't comfortable). Read up on potential Psychologists' online bios and consider:
do they write more about themselves, or do they speak to you as the client?
do they specify a client niche, or do they do it all?
do they identify themselves as being part of a cultural community that is important to you?
Referrals, Recommendations, and Online Directories
Now that you've figured out the how, where, and who of your future Psychologist, it's time to find the one for you! GPs are often in-the-know of good local Psychologists, and can write you a referral. You may also hear of Psychologists or psychology clinics recommended through friends. (We recommend you don't see the same Psychologist as anyone you know, as this can create an ethical dilemma). Online directories are also a great way to search for Psychologists by location and speciality, such as the Australian Psychological Society's Find A Psychologist tool and Psychology Today. Failing that, Google will also help you find a Psychologist in your area.
