OCD FAQs

How do you know if you have OCD?

OCD is more than just being orderly. People with OCD report spending up to several hours per day engaging in repetitive routines to alleviate upsetting and unwanted thoughts and images. People with OCD describe knowing the compulsion won't actually help avert disaster, but can't help but doing it regardless.

How can OCD therapy help?

OCD therapy can help by teaching you how to trace the origins of your fears, develop greater distress tolerance, and eventually not need your rituals or routines to cope. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) strategies such as Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) can help you regain your time and freedom

How long does OCD therapy take?

It’s hard to say exactly how long therapy for OCD takes, as everyone is different. The number of sessions will depend on a range of factors, including whether you have something else you’re struggling with (e.g., another diagnosis or history of trauma), and how well your environment supports you to change.

Do I need a referral?

No, you don’t need a referral to see an OCD psychologist. However, if you want to claim Medicare rebates, we recommend discussing your eligibility for a Mental Health Treatment Plan with your GP.
